Help Remove Non-Native Invasive Plants from the Park

Description:

Ranger Mary and Foundation Trustee, Jim Erckmann are organizing a fall weed removal event on Saturday, September 24, in Bridle Trails State Park. This event will be much lower key than the Earth Day event in April. We are trying a different approach this time – a less complex one that requires less organizational effort and has simpler logistics.

The focus will be on removing holly and laurel, using weed wrenches to pull these small trees. The trees will be cut up and left on-site. This is a common approach in the weed removal business, and we think it is worth a try in the park for our stewardship program.
When:

Saturday, September 24th

9:00 AM to Noon

Meet at the Big Ring off 116th Avenue NE, at about NE 53rd Street. Parking will be free for volunteers. We will likely focus mostly on the area around the ring and to the south of the ring and east of the parking lot.

Other Details:

We will likely work in teams of about five people, each equipped with a weed wrench, clippers, a mattock (for loosening roots), pruning saws to cut off branches or cut down larger trees that can’t be pulled, and other tools as needed. If we see any ivy and if we have time, we can clip it around the trees, remove the roots, and leave the material in place.

Tools will be provided, just bring sturdy shoes, grubby clothes, and work gloves. Gloves will be provided for those who need them.

Participants will be treated to lunch at a local eatery and snacks for a mid-morning break will be provided. Of course, if anyone wants to bring cookies or brownies to share would be welcome.

If you know others who might be willing to help, please ask them and let Jim Erckmann know if they plan to come.

As with the Earth Day event, we can give credit to high school kids who participate.

Thanks for your willingness to help take care of our great park.
